A blues musician (vocals, guitar, harmonica, mandolin) who has made St. John's, Newfoundland his home for the past thirty years, Peter Narvaez (pronounced nar-VY-ez) has played with many of the greats of acoustic blues including Sleepy John Estes, Yank Rachell, Big Joe Williams, Skip James, John Jackson, Johnny shines, Bukka White, Fred McDowell, the Jim Kweskin Jug Band, Dave Van Ronk, Pinetop Perkins and Denis Parker. In 1999 he produced a double CD of his recordings of the late Skip James for Document Records (DOCD 5633 & 5634).
A singer-songwriter as well, Peter has had his songs published and produced by Alan Freed, Buffy Sainte-Marie, John Fahey, Steve Annan, Glen Tilley and Ron Hynes. He has recorded original compositions for the Castle, Takoma (produced by legendary blues guitarist, the late John Fahey), Terraplane, Rap City, and Small Wonder labels as well as for Canadian Broadcasting Corporation (CBC) radio and TV.
In Newfoundland, his songs have been performed by Ron Hynes, Cathy Jones, Jamie Snider, The Wonderful Grand Band, Denis Parker, Roger Howse, Scott Goudie, Dog Meat Barbecue, Anita Best, and Vicky Hynes among others. Often appearing as an acoustic soloist, he has also played and recorded with many bands including the Rhythm Knights, the Hootchie Kootchie Jug Busters, Homegas, Marty and the Marginals, Divin' Duck, Terry and the Pirates, Hired Help, the Puzzle Factory, the Wonderful Grand Band, Bopular Demand, Boogieman, the Scott Goudie Band, the Denis Parker Band, the Roger Howse Band, and the Cookstown Jukes.
A frequent contributor to CBC radio's Goosebumps and the Performance Hour, he co-hosted, scripted, and performed with Denis Parker on CBC's history of blues series Red, Hot and Blue. His last recording, a vinyl LP entitled Rock 'n' Roll Ruby, received critical plaudits from local, regional, and national reviewers (the Herald, Atlantic Insight, Variety Tonight, Roots and Rhythm). He has played at numerous festivals including the Newfoundland and Labrador Folk Festival, the Carbonear Folk Festival, the Nottoden Blues Festival (Notodden, Norway), and the Whalin' the Blues Festival. Last summer he appeared at the Northampton (Massachsetts) Blues, Brews, and Barbecue Festival, the King William Fair, for the San Antonio Blues Society (Texas), as well as the Newfoundland and Labrador Folk Festival.
